A day in the life of a developer

    News
    by Stacy Parr Finance Manager

Have you ever wondered what a developer does all day? Well now is your chance to find out! We’ve caught up with our very own Abdul who is giving us an insight into what a day as a developer at Gooey is like.

    Morning

Our work days are slightly flexible provided that I’m getting all of my work done. I usually like to get in around 8.30/9am so that I can have a relaxed start to the day, catch up with my colleagues, and make myself a fruit tea (don’t judge, I’m not a coffee fan). No two days are the same working at Gooey, and prioritising my workload is pretty key. Getting in early enables me to check in with my project manager and go over my schedule, which is necessary when you are working on a couple of different projects or if you have some urgent work that’s just come in overnight.

I’ll begin coding by 9.30am. The great thing about being part of an agency with multiple clients is that we get to work on loads of exciting projects and you never really know what the next one will be. I joined Gooey as an apprentice 3 years ago. I didn’t really know much about coding back then but agency-life is fast-paced so I learnt pretty quickly, and working on different projects all the time really helps me to stretch and improve my skills.

    Lunch

We usually take lunch between 12.30 and 1.30. Personally, I love pasta but today is the last Friday of the month and Jay treats us to pizza (Chicken Feast for me please!) We are lucky enough to work in an office with a bunch of games tables, as well as a chill out area with a PlayStation and TV. I enjoy playing pool but I’m pretty average at it, I just close my eyes and hope for the best – I still seem to win most of the game though!

    Afternoon

Fuelled by pizza, I’m ready to tackle the final afternoon of the week. I meet with my project manager straight after lunch about booking in updates on a project that we worked on last week. Then I get my head down and code listening to some Gorillaz tunes to help me focus.

I have a call scheduled for 3pm with a client about a project I’m currently working on; they want some custom functionality adding and haven’t got a detailed brief, so this way I can talk them through how we will approach it and agree a game-plan.

I clock off between 5.30 and 6pm. Sometimes, I’ll chill out in office for a bit longer and play pool or PlayStation with the guys, but tonight we’re going for Friday drinks. Being in the centre of Manchester, we’re literally yards away from some great bars which is awesome for your social life. We enjoy The Whiskey Jar, or occasionally, we’ll head to Twenty Twenty Twos for ping-pong (we’re very competitive)!
